Animals! Animals!

Ages 5-10 ~ 4 Wednesdays, 4/4 - 4/25, 4:15-5:45 ~ $170

From Han Dynasty horse figures to Mesoamerican ocarina flutes, clay creatures are a long-lived theme in historical clay art. How can we transform slabs, coils, and round balls of clay into our animal dreams? We will look at historical pottery. We will sketch visions both cute and beastly. And of course we will sculpt sturdy clay critters using a variety of long-lived techniques. Students will share supportive, constructive ideas with one another, and all materials are included. At Ilana’s home in Beacon.

Solstice Feast

Ages 5-10 ~ 4 Wednesdays, 5/2 - 5/23, 4:15-5:45 ~ $170

What is the perfect plate for pepperoni pizza? Should lemonade be served in a double handled mug or a goblet? As we get ready for this special four-week workshop, we will plan a Solstice dinner, delegate dishes, and come to the clay table ready to create the perfect serving pieces for presentation. We will hand build our wares, inviting imagination when it comes to the design. Sculpted creatures may emerge from the side of a spaghetti bowl. Butterfly prints may flutter into the walls of our salad plates. Weeks one and two, we will focus on building the pieces. Weeks three and four, we decorate them with underglaze and sgraffito. On Wednesday, June 13th we bring our potluck of delicacies in our finished pieces, and we will feast in Ilana’s backyard garden! As usual, in class, students will share supportive, constructive ideas with one another, and all materials are included. At Ilana's home studio near Sargent School, Beacon, NY.
